We usually don’t think about our toes until one of them hurts! We’ve all done it – probably more than once. Stubbed our toe, dropped something on it, kicked the ball too hard, had a door or dresser jump in our way – leaving our toe throbbing and wondering what can I do for my hurt toe? Buddy taping is one treatment often used. Learn an easy way to treat a stubbed, jammed or broken toe without the messy tape.
Immediate Treatment for a Jammed or Broken Toe
Elevate your foot and apply ice wrapped in a towel to your hurt toe to help alleviate swelling. You can also take an anti-inflammatory, such as ibuprofen, to help with both the swelling and pain. If there is a cut on your toe or foot, wash it with water, pat it dry with a clean towel and apply an antibiotic cream to help prevent infection.

Buddy Taping for Hurt Toes
Buddy taping toes is when you take the toe next to the hurt toe and tape the two together to limit movement and help eliminate further injury. Medical tape is usually stiff, which keeps your toes from moving and the healthy toe acts like a splint, keeping the hurt toe in a natural position for healing.
Although buddy taping is a well known and useful method for treating sprains, dislocations, and other injuries of the toes it can be a cumbersome task. It usually involves hobbling around on your hurt foot, gathering up supplies needed such as adhesive tape, gauze or cotton, scissors and bandages. Then you push and pull on your poor, hurt toe as you try to get the gauze in the right spot and figure out how to cut and wrap the tape around both the gauze and your toe. All in the hopes of getting the right comfort level and fit.
Treating Your Hurt Toe Without Messy Tape
Or you could simply use a 3pp Toe Loop which allows for buddy wrapping without the tape. The easy loop and wrap design of the 3pp Toe Loop holds your two toes together to support and stabilize jammed, broken toes or other injuries. The breathable foam lining acts a comfortable cushion on the top and between your toes to relieve the rubbing and irritation from your shoes.
Putting on a 3pp Toe Loop is easy and puts a lot less stress on an already painful toe. Simply slip the loop section over the injured toe and wrap the “tail” around an adjacent toe. Securing the Velcro closure makes achieving the right fit easy every time.
3pp Toe Loops have no hard edges or rough straps and are thin enough to wear in shoes. Best of all they are washable and reusable. You won’t have to waste rolls of tape and boxes of gauze while your toe heals. They are latex free too, unlike many types of adhesive tape.
Please note – for serious injuries you should always consult a healthcare professional. Discuss this splint with your health care provider to determine if it is appropriate for your condition.

Not only does it provide the necessary support and stability, but it’s also more comfortable and less restrictive. I love how you’ve provided step-by-step instructions and even included alternatives for those who might not have smart hands. Thanks for sharing this valuable information—I’ll definitely be keeping it in mind the next time I hurt my toe!
I stubbed my next to the pinky toe earlier today and I think the toe needs a new toenail and both toes still in pain. Mom put some adhesive tape around 2 toes. Any other suggestions? I don’t think they’re broken.
